HEAD COACH: Jeff Brinkley
Coach Brinkley is
entering his 26th year as head football coach at NHHS. Coach Brinkley
has built a successful football program having taken his teams to the
CIF playoffs 18 times. His teams went to the CIF quarter finals in 1987,
1989, 1990, 1991 and 2007; CIF semi finals in 1997 and 2001; and CIF
finals in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. His teams won the CIF championship
3 times in 1994, 1999, and 2005. Coach Brinkley was named Orange County
Coach of the Year in 1992 and CIF Coach of the Year in 1994, 1999, and
2005. Coach Brinkley provides tremendous experience and knowledge about
the game of football and high school athletes. |

Defensive
Coordinator: Tony Ciarelli Coach Ciarelli is in his 18th year at NHHS. He serves as the Defensive Coordinator. Coach Ciarelli’s defenses are among the top in Southern California. He is known as an Olympic Lift fundamentalist. He began coaching at NHHS in 1989. He returned to NHHS in 2002 and has been here ever since. He previously coached for two years at Damien, 8 years at Edison and 5 years at Huntington Beach. Coach Ciarelli earned his Bachelor of Arts in History at Long Beach State. Coach Ciarelli is the founder and director of the Tony Ciarelli World Class Throwers Clinic and has 41 throwers on the Orange County All-Time Best List, more than any other coach in any event in Orange County History. |

Running Back
Coach: Coach Brown is in his 29th year at Newport Harbor High School and an alumni of NHHS. He coaches the offensive backs. Year in and year out Coach Brown pro- duces technically and fundamentally outstanding runningbacks. He has coached three C.I.F. Players of the Year. Coach Brown earned his degree in Dental Tech at UCLA. |

Linebacker
Coach: Coach Burns, the linebackers coach, is entering his 13th year as a coach at NHHS. He has had tremendous success producing four linebackers who have been recognized as “All-County.” Coach Burns has a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Cal State Fullerton and a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology. |

D-Backs: Garrett Govaars Coach Govaars is entering his 7th year as the defensive backs coach at NHHS. He was previously a freshman assis- tant for five years. His secondary is known for their sound fundamental play. Coach Govaars played for NHHS and now teaches social studies at NHHS. He attended UC Davis and graduated with degrees in psychology and history. Students and players alike relate well to Coach Govaars. He appreciates the potential for development and success in each of his players. |

Receivers Coach: Bill Calloway Coach Calloway is the receivers coach and, as such, produces talented receivers year after year. He is entering his 18th season as a football coach at NHHS. He also has three years prior coaching experience at Huntington Beach High School. Coach Calloway attended NHHS, and then both Cypress College and Golden West College. Coach Calloway is in the security industry. |

Offensive Line: Ryan Formento Coach Formento begins his 2nd season with the Sailors and, together with Coach Anderson, will serve as the Varsity and Junior Varsity Offensive Line Coach. He attended Villa Park High School where he earned honors playing offensive line. Upon graduation, Coach Formento went on to play in college at Santa Ana College under former NHHS football coach Zach Biehl. Coach Formento has previously served as an assistant football coach and both Villa Park and El Modena High Schools. Coach Formento holds an AA from Santa Ana College and is pursuing his degree in kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton. |

Offensive Line: Chris Anderson Coach Anderson begins his 2nd season with the Sailors and will serve as the Varsity and JV Offensive Line Coach. In high school, he was a stand-out linebacker; earning AZ all-state honors his senior year. After graduation, Coach Anderson played football for Whittier College, where he earned his B.A. in kinesiology, his teach- ing credential and a Master’s Degree in Education. For the 2008 and 2009 seasons, Coach Anderson also coached football at Whittier College, serving as the defensive and then offensive line coach. |

Tight Ends: George Greenwalt Entering his first year on varsity after 8 years coaching freshmen, 4 years at Costa Mesa High School (2 Frosh, 2 Varsity). Taught at Back Bay High School. Greenwalt played at Newport Harbor for Coach Brinkley. |

Defensive Line: Danny Pulido Coach Pulido is entering his 5th year coaching at NHHS and is an NHHS alumnus. He will serve as a defensive line coach. At NHHS, Daniel played 3 sports: football, basketball and baseball. He was a three year varsity football starter and played wide receiver and outside line backer. Upon graduation, he received a scholarship to play football at the University of Oregon. At Oregon, he studied history and played tight end from 1998- 2000 and rugby beginning in 2001. In 2003, he was an assistant rugby coach for the University of Oregon and in 2005, he coached tight ends/special teams in Bend, Oregon at Mountain View High School and Newport Harbor Freshman Baseball in 2008-2009. |

Strength: Stephanie Ciarelli Stephanie is now in her 7th year at Newport Harbor. Stephanie was one of the first female weightlifters in US History. She began her career in 1975 setting American records in both the squat at 245 lbs. and deadlift at 265 lbs with a body weight of 114 lbs. In 1995, she also qualifed for the USA National Champion?ships for Olympic Weightlifting. Stephanie began her coaching career in 1994. In 2002, she received the National High School Strength Coach of the Year award. Stephanie was the Head Coach for the USA National Junior Women’s Team and World Team. |
